Vania Alvarez
19”
She was born on a Friday afternoon,
Weighing 6 pounds.
I took her home from the hospital
Cradled in a soft, rose colored blanket,
Wailing and shrieking.
I did not sleep for the next two years.
2’9”
The summer after she she turned three,
I took her to pre-school.
Outside her classroom
She sobbed and yelled,
“Daddy, please don’t leave me!”
The oceans in her eyes roared,
“Please!”
And I let her delicate hand
Slip away from mine.
3’4”
The first time we went to Disneyland
I carried her on my shoulders.
She rested her hands over my head,
And I held on to her tiny legs.
She only came down to take a photo
With her favorite princess,
And then to buy a pink gown
And a blonde wig.
She excitedly watched
The 9:00 o’clock fireworks.
She had the best view
In the entire park.
