“Hostage A2467 come forward,” Tom, in recognition, turned around.
Captain Lorenza’s voice resonated through the speakers. The fat, ugly
woman who managed section A of The Place for the Useless. She had been
there for over twenty years before Tom’s arrival.
Tom once lived with a cellmate named John. Tom thought he had
escaped to the South, to the Central Americas, and had joined the rest of
the surviving clans. There was no evidence to prove that there were other
survivor bases or any type of resistance. Neither Tom nor the other prisoners
had any communication with The Outside, so the chatter about these
bases was all just rumors. Since John had disappeared, Tom encouraged
himself by thinking that Tom had run away to some base. Tom prefered
that version, that John had escaped, it gave him a sense of hope.
The Place of the Useless stood at the far end of what was once
Linley County, at least that was what he had been told. Tom didn’t really
remember the outside world. It had been a long time since he’d seen it. On
the other hand, he knew the inside of Section A of the building quite well.
When Tom arrived, years before, he had been separated from the older
boys. He was initially placed with the younger ones, at the bottom of the
building that no one really knew much about. He had estimated that there
were around fifteen cells above him. He was not sure though, because the
last time he had been let out of his cell had been a couple of years ago.
Ever since Tom’s cellmate and only friend had disappeared, he found
himself wanting to read. It was something he loved to do before being
taken by their enemies, the East. Once a month, prisoner A2468, or as they
called him, Boris, would offer him a new novel. Boris was known for being
the man. However, he sold things at very high prices. Because of this, Tom
was usually unable to read and was left alone with his thoughts. He often
had vivid flashbacks, dark memories from his past.
