Growing Away
Fernanda Oetling
Brown eyes like glass
Open a door to her little soul
Sunlight spills into her pupils
Making everything bright and wondrous
To the eyes of a child Sunlight spills in
But her opaque eyes dull its shine
No longer is the world staggering and new
Heightened colors dull and wash out
Her light no longer shines back at the sky
Heightened colors,
Mutate dull reality into something wild
A place to explore and conquer
A place of novelty, a place of firsts Light fractures as it passes through shattered glass
Casting a broken light on dusty reality
It coats old memories, makes them shine like glitter
A reminder of simple times she cannot go back to
Her little heart gleams through her eyes,
Matching the glare of sunlight
She collapses to the earth
Her short arms spread out like flower petals
Certain she could conquer the world if she tried As the girl with brown eyes walks in half-light
Forgetting the simple wonders
As she follows the rest of the world
Still innocent, though she thinks not
Navigating the rough terrain, growing away.
At some point she wanted to be a princess
But learned that they don’t all have magic
Then she wanted to be a superhero
Until she realized they don’t always win
