E thereal Alejandra Vázquez This is a warning notice: if you are reading this letter you will discover the story of my kind, of your kind and of your past, present and future. Only read this if you are prepared to unravel the story of pre-creation and of your future. Once upon a time.... Time. No, it was well before that, I distinctly remember, it was when the sky and sea were one. It was when we could reach out towards the heavens and dip our fingertips into its profundity, touching its nothingness. It was back when we bathed in streams of glowing stardust, that rose from the ground, soaking the infiniteness of our souls. I guess you would say, “ah, those were the days.” But back then they weren’t the “days;” back then, it was our eternal present. Unlike the greys, yellows and greens that dominate our planet today, the colors that we saw in our world — all those eons ago— were wild tones of violets, fuchsias, pastel blues and vibrant rose golds. A warm breeze swept through our world at all times, soaring over mountains and diving over lakes. Beauty was omnipresent, smelling of every fathomable flower; covering everything in the physical and spiritual world. That distant present could only be described in the language of humans as ethereal. Let’s begin again: once upon an ethereal, eternal present, we existed. We were creatures beyond your capacity of comprehension. We roamed the physical and metaphysical worlds; we were malleable beings. But this story is not the story about how we lived, but about how we perished for this new world, your world, to exist. 14 So, there we were, beautiful beings of light and shadow. We were content; we lived in peace. And the being you know today as God, back then was simply another being like us, belonging to the light and the dark. Perhaps his essence was different from ours, as he prefered not to show his physical presence, usually taking no shape at all. Nonetheless, he was ever existent, just like the rest of us. Your god, who went by no name back then, wanted to create a different world than the one we lived in, for he had grown bored of the shades and shadows, of light and the stardust that covered our world. However, not many followed his ideas, most of us were content with our lives. Most of us wanted our ethereal present to remain eternal, as it had been since infinity began. Yet, he firmly believed that even eternity had to come to a halt eventually, and he was willing to be the carrier of that end. He gathered a small army led by Gabriel, Raphael and Michael along with others of us who followed him, whom today you perhaps know as angels. So it was; your god battled our immortal spirits with his band of angels. Fiercely, we fought back; we fought for peace. After an eternity of arduous fighting, he won. He destroyed most of our kin, his kin. Only a few were spared, and those became his people, his followers and his adorers. I, for one, was not spared. My soul and body were slain and were sent to a place deeper and darker than you could fathom. This story I tell you, little, feeble human, so you may understand your story of creation. For you to understand that the invisible man in the sky you so feverishly believe in, is one of millions like him. I tell you this story for you to be prepared, so you know that once our souls finish recovering from the harm inflicted upon us by Him, we will rise again and take back what is ours. 15 By Ana Paula Ibarra
