Thanks for giving
By: Maketta Wright
Many of us have neglected to give thanks,
to the unforgettable people who have blessed us with our current ranks.
Thanks to our leaders and our ancestors,
who endured racism and sexism from their predecessors.
To the protesters and the inventors;
that required undivided attention,
for their voices to be heard; gaining recognition was absurd.
To march and sing “let freedom ring,”
didn’t mean to be glamorous and showoff your “bling, bling.”
So while you’re sitting in your office or luxury car,
take a moment to give thanks to those who’ve sacrificed to get you this far.
Thanks for giving me every opportunity imaginable for an African American living in this country.
