Hannah Snider was a junior in high school when she was told
she had a look the camera loved, and she should consider
modeling. “I was going to class with some friends, and we
stepped into the photography class. They were just finishing
class, and we decided to jump into the picture they were taking. A few days later the high school counselor called me into
her office and asked if I had any interest in modeling. I hadn’t
even thought about modeling so I told her I wasn’t sure. She
said the photography teacher had seen the picture from us
messing around and had come to talk to her.”
Hannah met with the teacher a few days later, and he told her
that she should consider modeling even if she just did it for
fun. He also gave her the names of several people to contact
that could give her advice on what she needed to do to get
started and help her begin networking.
“I had many photo sessions with photographers over the next
year and some of them told me the same thing the teacher
had. There is something about my bone structure, eyes or
whatever that translates well into the two dimensional images that a camera creates. With the right makeup, hairstyle
and lighting, my face changes and can be like a canvas for
the creative director.”
Hannah also found she had a talent for expressing. “I love
to draw and sometimes paint. It was easy for me to transfer
that artistic expression into a photo shoot. Once the photographer explains the mood or vision he has for the photo, I
visualize that in my mind, and I am able to communicate that
expression for the camera.”
After high school, Hannah went to cosmetology school to
learn hair and makeup. “One of the things I saw from being
part of a professional photographer’s team is how important
having a talented hair stylist and makeup artist was. I figured
learning that skill would make me more marketable and give
me a chance to become part of the industry, even if I wasn’t
the one in front of the camera.”
Currently Hannah is working full time as a makeup artist.
“Much of my business today comes from doing makeup for
brides and the wedding party, as well as for photo shoots.
Recently I had the opportunity to do the makeup for a music
video promoting the Ms. Kansas pageant and had a lot of fun
doing makeup for some of the contestants.”
Hannah’s photos have been published in several magazines
