Near James Street was the Coffee Pot restaurant, which was also a very popular spot. The only major food store in those days was the A&P, located on Brant near Maria Street. Burlington also had two privately owned dairies: Sani-Dairy and Lakeside Dairy, offering daily milk delivery to your door. Along these lines, I received an e-mail from Alan Renner, which brought back some memories for me: “Always enjoy your columns. Being 77, I can relate very well. My grandfather, Roy Renner, started Renner’s Drugs in 1905 in Hamilton, at the corner of Victoria and Barton, across from the General Hospital, and later moved it downtown near King and James. This was a much bigger store and included a Lunch Counter with swivel stools, which was a very popular spot with local shoppers. The store also carried a large selection of health-related goods. He later sold the business to his wife’s brother, and he went to work for Silverwood’s Dairy as the Manager.” Thanks very much Alan, for sharing these memories with us. My late wife Joan and I both worked at the old Imperial Bank in downtown Hamilton. Needing a quick bite to eat, we visited the lunch counter at Renner’s many, many times, and sat on those very stools. As many of you know, after leaving the bank, I too went to work for Silverwood’s.
