Hardware, Graham’s Hardware and Wamsley’s Bakery. Like
most small towns of the time, these local businesses were
very busy enterprises, especially on Saturdays. Near James
Street was the Coffee Pot restaurant, which was also a very
popular spot.
The only major food store in those days was the A&P, located
on Brant near Maria Street. Burlington also had two privately
owned dairies: Sani-Dairy and Lakeside Dairy, offering daily
milk delivery to your door.
Along these lines, I received an e-mail from Alan Renner,
which brought back some memories for me:
“Always enjoy your columns. Being 77, I can relate very
well. My grandfather, Roy Renner, started Renner’s Drugs in
1905 in Hamilton, at the corner of Victoria and Barton, across
from the General Hospital, and later moved it downtown near
King and James. This was a much bigger store and included a
Lunch Counter with swivel stools, which was a very popular
spot with local shoppers. The store also carried a large selection
of health-related goods. He later sold the business to his
wife’s brother, and he went to work for Silverwood’s Dairy
as the Manager.” Thanks very much Alan, for sharing these
memories with us.
My late wife Joan and I both worked at the old Imperial
Bank in downtown Hamilton. Needing a quick bite to eat, we
visited the lunch counter at Renner’s many, many times, and
sat on those very stools. As many of you know, after leaving
the bank, I too went to work for Silverwood’s. Small world.•
