Linking back pain to your feet
Back pain is a very common problem, affecting many
individuals. There can be many causes for back pain, but in
the absence of an injury, back pain may be caused by factors
stemming from your feet. Our feet can take from three to five
times our body’s weight, especially while running.
During motion, it is important to remember that our feet,
legs, hips and back, form a kinetic chain, and a problem in
one of them can change how the other parts of your body
function.
For example, if there is heel pain, the way you walk will
change so as to cause a minimal amount of pain. This
change in the feet will alter the position of the ankles, which
will affect the position of the knees, hips and back. This
change in position may cause pain in any of these
additional areas, additionally, it may also lead to
injuries/sprains or even arthritis in these areas.
A few factors that can help alleviate the symptoms and
prevent long term complications are:
• Proper footwear – avoid high heel shoes and instead, find
the right type of footwear suited to your feet and type of
activities performed.
• Custom-made foot orthotics, to correct biomechanical foot
issues.
• Treatment of painful lesions on feet, like corns, calluses, or
warts.
• Healthy lifestyle and possible weight loss, to avoid
excessive load on the feet.
• Regular professional foot care treatment, especially for
seniors and diabetic patients.
