She tried her debit, then she tried her credit card. Nothing worked. I changed cashiers and went about paying for my groceries. When I was done, I noticed the lady’s frustration had grown while she continued to use different cards to try and pay for her items. I went up to her and asked if she was alright, and offered to pay for her groceries. She replied hastily, “Mind your own business young lady!” I apologized and left. But this situation is typical, I believe, as we have become accustomed to ‘mind our own business’ and not offer to help – not open ourselves up to crossing paths with others. Some think the begger in front of our Fortinos store is “disgusting,” while others believe it’s not worth it to help the homeless man at the corner of Brant and the QEW, because he may use the donations to buy drugs. Oh yes, I’ve heard it all. Still, I have faith in people, and I’ve been taught not to judge. It’s none of my business what others’ situation is, but it IS my business to help. I just hope the lady at the grocery store thought of my offer once she got home, and hope one day she will be able to offer the same to someone else, just as someone did for me long ago. This is what the real reason for the season is: Giving without judgement. May you do the same in 2019. PS: Please #SkipThePlasticStraw. You don’t need it. www.ipao.ca Suzanne Soto-Davies Founder & Publisher, Silver and Gold Magazine [email protected] Silver & Gold Magazine ~ WINTER 2018 5
