short. And while we could eliminate such worries with
financial planning and retirement coaching, many fear
there isn’t any solution and are still trying their best
without help.
There’s also a brilliant idea that retirement can be a time
of new endeavours, even new business opportunities.
Nearly a third in my surveys see themselves in a “new
career, reinventing myself in new work activities.” This
is a doorway to new roles and identity. People sell a
business to become “angel investor” or “consultant”, or
tag themselves as a “family advisor”. Call this what you
may – a “new” or “Unretirement Career” – limited only
to our imagination and resourcefulness.
One fellow said “I’ll retire to a box” but this wasn’t
meant to be negative. He has already transferred business
responsibilities to family and staff, and keeps actively
engaged in his late 70s. He built the freedom and legal
structure to do this, and business will keep thriving long
after he’s gone.
Are we afraid of being a Caregiver?
32% say it’s a worry yet only 15% admit it could be
a future title in their life. What we should know here
is that caregiving offers experiences and silver-linings to
grace the clouds. First, lets ensure caregivers have support
for their own health and wellbeing. And if this is so,
then today’s caregivers are saying this season of life can
be marked with love, fun, and more social stimulation
than they had expected.
Fact is, whether we’re retired today or preparing for next
steps in retirement, we will have many opportunities to
enrich and expand WHO WE ARE. If money were no
issue, if we have the time to invest, if we can participate
in new social arenas and find new areas of purpose, then
retiring is like learning to ride a bike, or moving from
school into career, or leaving the workforce to create our
own new horizons. So if you and I are talking about
life-values and “who we are”, with retirement planning
we can open these doors to unleash the life you choose,
and the true satisfaction you long to enjoy.•
