Athlete’s Foot: Not just for athletes
We’re Looking
After Your Health!
Athlete’s Foot is a very common condition, and despite
the negative stigma it really affects people of all ages and
genders. The name ‘Athlete’s Foot’ actually encompasses
two conditions: fungus of the skin (of the foot) and fungal
nails.
$
Fungus is a contagious condition that can be transferred
from person to person. Unlike a common cold,
transmission from actual skin-to-skin contact is extremely
low; instead the fungus can live on nail clippers and files
that are not properly disinfected.
Change socks often and apply a foot powder if feet are
prone to sweating. Use an anti-microbial shoe spray to kill
any fungus living inside shoes.
Athlete’s Foot most commonly causes cracking or peeling of
the skin, or crumbly, yellow toenails. It can also cause itchy,
painful irritation of the skin. Fungal skin infections are easily
treated, sometimes with over the counter medicines or
prescriptions strength, prescribed by your Chiropodist,
whereas nail infections require a more diligent, medicated
regime, but have a better cure rate with early detection.
Nail salons in particular, have received a lot of attention
lately has stories have surfaced with regards to improper
disinfection techniques leading to serious infections. Ask
salons about their sterile procedure, and make sure the
nail instruments come in sealed packs or are disposable,
that way you know they have not been used on someone
else.
Another unlikely hiding spot for fungus can be in your
own shoes. Feet that perspire and are stuck in tight or
constrictive shoes all day don’t allow for air-flow, and
create that particular warm, moist environment. Wear
proper fitting, breathable shoes and clean socks made
from natural materials (cotton, wool) or, that are moisture
repellent to keep skin dry.

Fungi are tiny microbes that thrive in a warm, moist
environment. Since they are not visible they can hide
very easily in plain sight.
Communal places such as public showers, locker rooms,
steam rooms and swimming pools are ideal situations in
which fungus can flourish and infect unknowing bare
footers. Protect your feet by wearing sandals at all time
and make sure to properly dry the soles and in-between
toes before putting socks and shoes back on.
