AFGHANS FOR CANCER
F or almost two decades, Wellwood Cancer Resource Centre
in Hamilton has been distributing colourful afghans to people
of all ages who are living with cancer. Every blanket has been
created through the contributions of volunteer knitters – some
knit a few rows while sitting in a hospital waiting room, while
others knit entire blankets or scarves, which are sometimes
made into dolls for children living with cancer.
A production powerhouse group, affectionately called the
“Square Ladies of Burlington” have been meeting at St.
Patrick’s Church hall every Thursday morning – almost since
the inception of the program – to knit squares, join them
into afghans, and organize the packaging of the items for
donation to Wellwood.

the church, but are grateful
to them for letting them
use the hall and providing a
large cupboard for storage of
materials and finished afghans.
It’s a labour of love that has
touched thousands of cancer
patients and their families, by
providing them with a smile
and a reminder that, although
cancer is heavy, through
selfless giving and community
support, some of the weight
can be lifted.
