DINNER or SUPPER? T he word ‘dinner’ comes from the French word ‘disnar’, which means ‘breakfast’. Traditionally, dinner was the first meal of the day, eaten around noon, and the largest meal of the day. A lighter meal came later on during late afternoon, which was known as ‘supper’. The word ‘supper’ comes from the French word ‘souper’ meaning ‘evening meal’. It’s said to come from Jesus’ last meal before his crucifixion: The Last Supper. As time passed and people began learning more about how the body reacted to additional smaller meals and snacks in between, with a relationship to healthier lifestyles, dinner and supper became synonyms to ‘eating the last evening meal’.
