Precautions for Pedicures
Warmer weather means sandal season, and many will be
pampering their feet and getting pedicures. Most people
are unaware of the possible dangers that can occur with
pedicures. With the high number of nail salons out there,
here are some precautions you should take to protect
yourself.
• Ask questions: Foot soak basins and instruments used to
cut and clean around the nails always need to be
disinfected in between uses. They should be using a
solution that kills microorganisms which will prevent a
bacterial or fungal infection.
• Look for establishments that give you the nail file/buffer
they used, at the end of the service. This way, you will
know for sure that they have not been used on anyone else.
• When toenails are being trimmed, ensure they are not
cut too short or cut down deep into the corners, as sharp
edges could be left, or an accidental injury could cause a
break in the skin that could lead to infection.
Things to avoid:
• Razor blades, which can easily cut and damage the skin.
• Pumice stones (or other porous files), cannot be properly
disinfected in between uses. They also are very abrasive
and can cause scratches and cuts.
• Both, as damage to the skin will lead to pain and
increased risk of infection. Please remember, if you have
a medical condition – such as an ingrown nail or corn –
you should see a Chiropodist and not an esthetician.
