Once again I am on the band wagon with regards to celebrating Canada ’ s 150 anniversary by visiting your neighbourhood . Why not entertain yourself by doing day trips that are right in your own backyard ? When was the last time you went on a day-trip close to home ? Let ’ s do this !
One of the most exciting things happening in Hamilton will be the visit of 11 Tall Ships , arriving at Pier 8 on June 30th until July 1st . These ships are making their rounds around the world . How exciting would that be , as last time they were here was in 2013 ! www . hamilton . ca
Another great place to see will be Dundurn Castle , as it has been completely refurbished and will celebrate its 50th anniversary as a historic house museum , re-opening on June 17th with special tours of its wonderful historic rooms , crafts and games , music and more . On July 1st , it will also host the Canada Day Military Tattoo , a free event which starts at 5pm . You haven ’ t seen Dundurn Castle like this … and it ’ s so close by ! www . hamilton . ca / dundurn
How about getting out to have a great lunch ? Visit the Windmill Country Market in Mt . Pleasant . Not only is it a great place to eat breakfast and lunch at ( the fresh bread is delicious !), but they also have a great gift shop , deli shop , and a specialty grocery store . It ’ s a short ride just south of Brantford – just keep in mind they ’ re closed on Sundays . www . thewindmill . ca
Speaking of great meals , Café Troy is also a wonderful place to visit and have lunch at – I speak from personal experience ! While there you can stop by next door and see Donn Zver ’ s Pottery Studio , all in Troy , only about 20 minutes on Hwy 5 , on the way to St . George . There will also be a “ Summer Seconds ” sale on June 17th , with many items being sold at 50 % discounts . Be sure to make a reservation to the wonderful Café though , as it does get busy ! www . donnzver . com
Another great place to visit this summer is Port Dover , for the Summer Festival taking place on August 19th and 20th . Port Dover is always a good place to visit and have some fresh Lake Erie Perch and spend some time at their beautiful beaches . If nature is what you ’ re missing , take a day trip out to the countryside ! A short and easy train ride off the Port Stanley Terminal Rail will take you to St . Thomas and back . It ’ s a couple of hours away but a great experience for your summer
Windmill Country Market
bucket list ! These historic locomotives from the 1940 ’ s and 50 ’ s pull the train at a leisurely pace , and the cabooses have been converted into both open and closed cars . Port Stanley is a nice little village with various shops and small restaurants , and the Harbourfest will take place August 5 through 7th , with performers , bands , artisans and more . If you ’ re looking for something more familiar , we continue to offer day-trips to St . Jacob ’ s , where you can visit new vendors and restaurants . This year , we are combining St . Jacobs Market with a luncheon to Anna Maes in Millbank to celebrate Canada 150th . It ’ s coming up on June 29th so call me quickly for more information !
Looking for a great little secret to visit ? Josmar Acres is the place ! Enjoy farm-fresh produce , beautiful flower arrangements for purchase , crafts and goodies , or sit quietly by the pond . They have recently increased their greenhouse space too , so there are more plants for sale than ever before . It ’ s the best place to pick your own strawberries , with well-tended , juicy and sweet fruit … It ’ s a country oasis and worth the day-trip ! www . josmaracres . com
