WELL-BEING

BENEFITS OF WATER THERAPY

– By Megan Grantham , Chiropodist
Did you know that certain conditions and injuries are best treated while you are in the water ? Performing exercise for rehabilitation in the water can be beneficial especially for individuals with neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders .
Aquatic therapy differs from land therapy due to the specific properties of water . The buoyancy of the water decreases joint compression forces and pain during exercise , providing a safe environment to address balance , strength , and postural deficits .

The use of water allows you to function at levels that are not possible outside of this environment , which provides positive physical results .
Aqua therapy is highly effective in managing chronic pain . Hydrostatic pressure is the force exerted on the immersed body by fluid molecules . In the case of hydrostatic pressure , no movement is necessary in order to reap the benefits . Hydrostatic pressure decreases pain and edema *, which leads to increased range of motion . It also increases venous return and circulation by assisting the heart and decreasing the pooling of blood in the extremities .
Many musculoskeletal and neurological conditions may benefit from aquatic therapy including :
• orthopaedic disorders
• post surgical cases
• arthritis
• back pain and chronic pain
• impaired balance disorders
• sports rehabilitation
Most patients find that aquatic therapy provides a safe way to regain their strength , balance , range of motion and flexibility while managing pain and swelling .
The initial assessment takes place in the clinic where treatment goals and plan of care is initiated . If pool therapy is indicated , the therapist will establish a follow up therapy sessions in the water . It is not necessary for patients to know how to swim before initiating an aquatic therapy program . •
