Types of wood and their best uses
Generally speaking there are two types of wood: hardwood
and softwood. Hardwood and softwood do not necessarily
mean that the wood is either “hard” or “soft”. Hardwood
comes from deciduous trees – meaning those trees whose
seeds have covers and shed their leaves annually, such as
maple, oak, and birch. Softwood are those that come from
trees that are conifers, meaning trees that are uncovered and
fall to the ground, like pine, cedar, and spruce.
Here are some common wood descriptions and their uses.
Hardwood Variety
Maple - best used for fine furniture and flooring.
Mahogany- resists shrinking, swelling and warping and best
used for cabinetry and boat construction.
Walnut - resists warping and best used for cabinetry, furniture
and wall paneling.
Softwood Variety
Cedar - it has a rich uniform textured grain that is great to
work with. Its natural sweet scent deters many insects such as
moths, fleas and termites. Best used for constructing gazebos,
decks, bunkies, dock planks and sheds.
Pine- has very uniform texture that is easy to work on. It is
not susceptible to warping and swelling and is best used for
house construction, furniture, paneling, boxes and molding.
Spruce - it’s hard and strong but decays easily so wood protection is needed. It is lightweight so usually used for crates,
boxes, ladders and general millwork. •
Oak - strong yet bendable, and resists absorption of moisture.
Best used for furniture, veneers and tool handles.
