I advised Joel to let the BBB (Better Business Bureau)
know of his new business. They will in turn open a free
file on him and share his new business information with
potential customers who may call to inquire about his
services. Alternatively he can choose to get an optional
membership with the BBB, which can also be acquired
through the local Chamber of Commerce.
Networking is an important part of business, so I advised
Joel to get out there and meet with other local business
owners and get his name out there, and get his face known
and recognized for the honest and hard working person he is.
Creating a website and starting to build Joel’s brand across
the internet is extremely helpful. It will answer many people’s
questions about the types of services he offers, what his
limitations may be, areas serviced, and it will share basic
information about his legitimate business.
It is also very important to have a business telephone land
line – do not operate a business just through a cell phone, as it
can make anyone appear as a fly-by-night contractor! Besides,
if you’re concentrating and working hard at a renovation
project, it’s never safe to stop and answer a cell phone.
