Senior-Focused Foot Care Available Spring-time: It’s time to get outside! We made it through the winter, and now it’s time to get off the couch and get back walking and enjoying the outdoors!  When starting any exercise plan, it is very important that our feet are healthy enough to carry us through.  Walking is one of the best forms of exercise, as long as your feet feel good.  First, always remember to warm up and cool down, as stretching improves circulation and removes muscle bi-product (lactic acid), which causes stiffness and pain.  By stretching, you can also prevent muscle strains. Choose your terrain: Avoid long periods of walking on hard surfaces or uneven ground – instead, walk on grass or dirt paths that are flat and even. If you do get hurt, consult with one of our Chiropractors to have your injuries assessed and treated as soon as possible, to ensure you heal faster.    Proper shoes are very important: They should protect and support your feet. Look for shoes with good cushioning, enough room for your toes to move, made with a breathable material, and should be firm when twisted from side to side.  Always be aware of any red or swollen areas on your feet, as changes or pain can be signs of circulation or alignment problems.  If you’re unsure whether it’s serious or not, consult with one of our Chiropodists. Whether you bathe in a pool, lake, or ocean, always keep feet protected from stings, cuts and other injuries.  When you are out of the water, make sure to dry feet thoroughly, including in between toes, and avoid sharing towels, which could lead to Athlete’s Foot or other diseases.  Pay close attention to your nails, as damp conditions can make them very vulnerable!  Injury to nails and the nail bed can make you more susceptible to infections.   So before heading outside, don’t forget the sunscreen (feet burn too) and to check up on your feet regularly.  We want everyone’s feet healthy this year – one step at a time!
