THE HEALING PURR
– By Elizabeth Norm
S cientists have long studied the benefits of a cat’s purr,
and have consistently been able to show that people are
40% less likely suffer a heart-attack, and more likely to
heal faster, if they own a cat.
The power of sound has been studied for centuries. Just
as with certain music, it is believed that some frequencies
can have healing and calming effects on the body. As such, a
cat’s purr has been shown to have these interesting qualities:
• Purring releases endorphins in both cats and humans,
reducing stress levels which are helpful for lowering blood
pressure and coping with illness and disease.
• A person with respiratory illnesses has been shown to
breathe easier if a purring cat is nearby.
• Cat’s have the ability to purr softly when they are aware
owners are sleeping, and loudly when they want to be found
(such as a kitten in a closet may do), or fed!
• Other animals able to produce purr-like sounds include
bears, foxes, hyaenas, squirrels, and lemurs. We highly
suggest owning a cat instead! •
“There are two means of refuge
from the miseries of life:
Music and cats.”
• Migraines and headaches can be eased and often disappear,
when the sufferer’s head is near a purring cat.
• A purring cat’s frequency has a pattern of between 20 to
30 vibrations per second (average of 21.98 Hz). These
frequencies have been used in therapeutic medicine to
improve bone density and promote bone healing – for
both cats and humans!
