Remember the traffic circle at Highway 20 and the
Q.E.W.? (I) Cannot imagine getting around that with
today’s traffic volumes. I delivered fuel oil for Gillies
Guy one winter and delivered to several homes on the
Burlington side of the beach strip. Those homes faced
out onto the lake side of the rail lines that ran through
that area back then. This meant that in order for me to
deliver to them, I had to stretch my hoses across the
railway tracks and hope that no trains would come along.
Those were the days”.
Thanks very much Trevor for sharing your memories!
The Lord’s Day Act, established in 1906, prohibited
business transactions from taking place on Sundays
– the day of the week reserved for observing and
promoting worship and religious activities.
On April 24, 1985, the Supreme Court of Canada
ruled that the old-fashioned Act violated Canadians’
freedom of religion, noting the Christian value of
keeping Sunday holy had been incorporated into
a law that
affected all
Canadians,
Christian or not.
In 1992, backed
by strong public
opposition to
Sunday closing,
the Rae
government
amended the
Retail Business
Holidays Act to
permit Sunday
shopping in
Ontario.

Your Moments + Memories
Trevor Jones of Dundas writes: “Hi Don, just finished
reading your interesting article in Silver and Gold and
can relate to much of what you have written. I moved to
Dundas in the Fall of 1954, (when the) population was
slightly more than Burlington. I was just 19 at the time
and spent a lot of time down at the beach strip. One of
our favourite pastimes was driving by the open-air Bingo
Hall and hollering “BINGO” out the window of the
car, and then listening to the caller saying to everyone
in attendance: ‘Hold onto your cards, folks’. The lift
bridge certainly held up the Q.E.W., but gave you time
to meet and talk with your other travellers.
