Celebrating over 24 years OF HELPING PEOPLE O n our website, on exactly this page (page 25), we have placed a series of sounds that you can use to test out your hearing*. These are sounds which some major retailers actually use to keep teenagers from loitering outside of their stores. They are called “Mosquito teen repeller” and they’re proving quite effective. 8000 hertz (cycles per second): Everyone should be able to hear this frequency. 12,000 hertz is difficult for anyone over 50 to hear. Most people over 19 will not be able to detect this sound. How young are your ears? As we age, we can no longer hear certain high-pitched noises as well as we used to. This natural aging process is called presbycusis, and it can begin as early as 18 years young. Presbycusis is a result of the degeneration of the sensor cells in our ears, and occurs gradually, initially affecting the ability to hear higher pitched sounds. There are some foods which are recommended to support healthy function and cell regeneration of your hearing and the rest of your body, especially folic acid, which helps your body generate new cell growth and increase circulation in the body, and potassium, which regulates the fluid in your inner ear. It’s important to note that, although hearing loss cannot be reversed, it can be protected from further damage, and improved by the use of a hearing device. Regardless of your age, it is important to have your hearing checked to have a ‘base’ in which to judge hearing changes.• * NOTE: These sounds are not professional tests, but just for entertainment and to encourage hearing care and hearing awareness. If you’re concerned about your hearing and how it is changing as you age, please have a professional hearing assessment done. When Your Feet Hurt,You Hurt All Over!
