OUTDOOR STEP
SAFETY
F irst, thoroughly clean wooden steps with a deck cleaner
or brightener, which will open the pores of the wood and
remove any mould and dirt embedded inside.

Deck & fence repairs.
Next, apply one of the following three options:
Least expensive option: Apply an
anti-slip spray coating to the steps and allow to
thoroughly dry. It will dry clear and prevent water
from seeping inside the pores and freezing over.
This product is available at your local hardware
store - approx. $40/can.
Medium cost: Peel + Stick Adhesive Strips.
After wood has been thoroughly cleaned, add
some peel and stick adhesive abrasive strips to the
front of the steps. Some of these strips may even come with a
small fluore scent strip, which helps in visually differentiating
between one step and the next. Available at some larger
hardware stores as well as online (www.uline.ca) - approx.
$150 for fifty 6” x 24” strips, or approx. $90 for one 4” x
60’ length strip.

Most expensive option: Outdoor Heated Stair Mat.
This is a plug-in option and works like a charm to gently heat
up steps and melt frost and ice on contact. Best option is to
find them online (www.heattrak.com or costco.ca), approx.
$260 for set of three.
