The Rose Garden the public has grown to know , has literally been transformed from its former displays of labour- and resource-intensive hybrid tea , floribunda , and heritage roses in traditional linear beds , into a modern interpretation of genetically hardy , disease-resistant roses and companion plantings of perennials , annuals , and summer bulbs comingling edge-to-edge in curvilinear beds that beckon views around the next hidden bend .
As of February 2018 , all of the major paved surfaces have been fully completed , the two magnificent gazebos and their unique granite rose compass floors have been installed , fourteen new benches have been set into place , a new tea house terrace has been built which faces the garden , new planting beds have been installed ( complete with underdrainage , 18 ” of new soil , and drip irrigation ), fourteen new fastigiate trees , representing seven genera , have been planted , sod has been laid , and twelve whimsical DNA-inspired double-helicoid climbing rose supports have been installed . Now RBG awaits the arrival and planting of nearly 2,500 roses and over 6,500 companion plants ( perennials , annuals , summer bulbs ) this spring !
When the garden opens to the public in June , it will be unrecognizable from its previous incarnation . Carefully selected disease-resistant roses , companion plants , water features , and pergolas will ensure a stunning visit beyond the traditional rose-growing season . Beneath the ground , a new upgraded irrigation system will ensure deepened root systems and healthier flowers throughout , while conserving water .
RBG sees the new Rose Garden as an opportunity to continue its leadership in sustainable gardening and celebrate this region ’ s heritage while promoting behaviours necessary for a brighter future .•
