When the Bozzo ’ s complained and demanded corrective action as this was not what they had paid for , the contractor left – leaving the wiring and backsplash outlets hanging out of the wall with live exposed wiring dangling in mid-air !
As a contractor myself , my best advice to homeowners is , be a smart shopper : DO YOUR HOMEWORK FIRST !
• Check for city or provincial contractor licensing where required , by calling your local city hall building department
• Find out for yourself if your project needs a building permit or a provincial electrical permit , and do not take the contractor ’ s word for it
• Ask for references – not just the usual two or three … Demand AT LEAST A DOZEN , and telephone them all
• Google the contractor and see if any “ dirt ” comes up under both their personal name and business name . It ’ s surprising what you may find !
• Check out their rating under your local BBB ( Better Business Bureau )
• Are they involved in the community ? Chamber of Commerce members , volunteer work , etc .? This may be a good way to learn more about their reputation .
• Always “ get it in writing ” – have the entire deal in a written contract specifying every possible aspect of the job , including your Ontario ten day cooling off period , which allows you some breathing room , 10 calendar days to re think what you have committed yourself to and cancel the contract while receiving your deposit back in full
• Above all , always “ go with your gut ” feeling . Most often , if something feels wrong or too good to be true then it usually is – for that specific reason you must study the contractor very well during their visit to your home while they estimate your project . And don ’ t be shy to try their patience with as many questions as you can , and watch for any sign of frustration or contradictory statements . •
