Avoiding injuries this Spring Spring is a season of new beginnings, longer days, and greater energy. When tackling new projects in and around the home, unexpected injuries can often strike, interfering with even the best-laid plans. With these projects, increased standing, bending, reaching and twisting occur, increasing strain to the muscles and joints of the body. Even for a healthy and fit person, these new and repetitive motions are factors that can cause tendinitis of the lower legs and feet as well as the shoulders and elbows. Back strain can occur with over reaching, extending and twisting, with an activity as simple as painting. We’ve Expanded Our Services! Foot care & Orthotic Centre Acupuncture The health care professionals at Omni Clinics have some guidelines to avoid injuries: Footwear – Start with a solid foundation, fight the urge to use older, worn-out shoes. Ensure the footwear you are using has support, structure, and adequate cushioning. With older shoes, the support and cushioning wears down, increasing stress to the muscles and joints of the foot, ankles, knees, and lower back. If you wear orthotics, make sure they are used while you are doing these activities. Stretch and Posture – Stretch before and after your activity, targeting the areas you have put the strain on. When reaching, lifting and twisting, bend your knees for stability and engage your core to reduce further strain to your spine and back. Physiotherapy Chiropractic Registered Massage Therapy Aqua-Therapy Sports Injury Rehabilitation Take Breaks – It is important to work at a slow and comfortable pace. Take repetitive breaks or switch tasks often to prevent from being in the same posture for too long. The longer you hold one position the more strain you are putting on those particular muscles and joints. Hydrate – Even though you may not sweat, your body is working hard to perform all of these activities. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to ensure your body has enough water to avoid fatigue. Concerns are best addressed sooner rather than later. Don’t hesitate to contact us at OMNI Clinics for a consultation.
