OPENED WINE BOTTLE
S ometimes you may just enjoy a glass or two of wine with
a beautiful meal or a beautiful friend… Then what do you
do with the rest of it? How long can you keep an opened
bottle of wine?
The easy answer is, depends on what you’re planning on
doing with it!
Once opened, oxygen is wine’s worst enemy – especially to
fruity and fresh flavours. Two to three days is the maximum
recommended time for most wines, in order for it to still
remain pleasantly drinkable. Keep in mind that even if its
taste is not at its optimum, it won’t do you any harm – you
could still use it for cooking.
Putting the opened bottle of wine in the fridge can slightly
slow down the oxidation reaction, but remember that oxygen
is actually more soluble in cold wine. One handy solution
may be to decant the wine into a smaller bottle in order to
reduce the airspace in the bottle.
If you opened an 8 year old bottle to enjoy, either finish
it off or throw it out. These older wines can spoil within a
few hours.•
