ROSEMARY
FOR MEMORY

P rospective memory is what our minds do for “remembering
to remember” – for example, when you say to yourself,
“I must remember to take my medication at 3pm.” Now a
team of researchers at Northumbria University in the UK
have discovered that rosemary can improve memory.
The study was conducted on a group of healthy seniors, split
into two groups: One in a room scented with rosemary, and
the other without any scent at all. The prospective memory
in those in the rosemary scented room tested 15% higher.
But this is not news, after all it was Shakespeare who wrote
in Hamlet, “There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance; pray,
love, remember…”
The UK study indicated that people in the rosemary scented
room found they felt more alert, invigorated, and focused.
Prospective memory tests were run on the group, and found
their ability to remember important tasks were largely – and
quickly – improved.
Other benefits of rosemary include, hair growth and baldness
prevention (when oil-infused and applied topically), stress and
anxiety reduction, hormone balance, anti-aging skin effects,
cough reduction, and when ingested it has been shown to
boost immunity, aid digestion, stimulate blood flow (good
for vision, arthritis, digestion, gout, movement in general),
and migraine relief.
The name “rosemary” is derived from the Latin words ros
marinus, which literally means “dew of the sea.” Rosemary
is a member of the mint family.
PRECAUTION – Rosemary has been known to interfere
with certain drugs like Warfarin, Lithium and Lasix, and if
used in the form of an essential oil, it’s not recommended for
pregnant or lactating women. •
