“Feet are moving, so why are you letting
your shoes immobilize them?”
Titles such as the above pop up in headlines regularly and
if you’re suffering with painful feet, you may try anything
with the hope of relieving pain and returning to normal
function. The issue with this particular headline is that if you
have an underlying foot issue, going barefoot or using
minimalist shoes will make your condition and symptoms
worsen.
As is the case with arthritis, for example: Arthritis, in
general terms, is the inflammation and swelling of the
cartilage and lining of the joints, generally accompanied
by an increase of the fluid in the joints. Arthritis has multiple
causes, so joint inflammation and arthritis can be
associated with various illnesses which cause different pain
severity and discomfort.
Arthritis can affect the physical structure and proper
function of the feet, so it is important to see a Chiropodist
if any of the following symptoms occur in the feet:
• Swelling in one or more joints
• Recurring pain or tenderness in any joint
• Redness or heat in a joint
• Limitation in motion of joint
• Early morning stiffness
The objectives for the treatment of arthritis include
controlling inflammation, preserving joint function (or
restoring it, if it has been lost), and curing the disease
whenever possible. Besides medication and physical therapy,
preserving or restoring joint function may be achieved
through structured footwear and orthotic inserts. If you suffer
from mild or severe arthritis, we recommend seeing your
Chiropodist at Omnifoot as soon as possible, and getting the
appropriate advice on how to relieve pain and prevent
further damage.
