UNDERSTANDING CLEANSES – By Dr. Sara Celik, ND I t’s a common misconception that cleanses are difficult and cause digestive discomfort. Many are surprised to learn that there are plenty of cleanses that don’t cause intestinal cramping and diarrhea. If you’re concerned about feeling uncomfortable during a cleanse, it’s best to steer clear of powerful formulations that may lead to reactions. Full body cleanses that are free of harsh ingredients such as senna and cascara sagrada are gentler on the digestive system and less likely to cause gastrointestinal side effects. I always encourage my patients to consider gentle detox programs that target more than just the colon. A complete herbal cleansing program can help to eliminate toxins from other important elimination pathways such as the liver, kidneys, skin, blood, lymphatic system, and lungs. FALL BACK ON TRACK! Two of my favourite cleansers are milk thistle and dandelion root. These natural cleansing botanicals remain two of the most popular ingredients for enhancing the body’s natural detoxification pathways. These ingredients are cholagogues, which support healthy bile flow and healthier digestion. Bile plays a vital role in cleansing as it carries fat-soluble toxins to be removed from the body. Herbs like milk thistle and dandelion root help reduce the recirculation of toxins back to the liver. With every good cleanse comes adequate fibre. Fibre is found in a variety of foods such as avocados (7 g/100 g), mung beans (16 g/100 g), and oats (11 g/100 g), however, most people may benefit from a flax-based fibre supplement that can easily be added to a morning cleansing smoothie. This time of year is perfect to ask your naturopathic doctor or health food store staff about cleanses. Regardless of the cleanse you choose, remember that fibre helps prevent enterohepatic recirculation. In other words, fibre supports digestive health and prevents toxins from being recycled back into the bloodstream. A gentle cleanse can keep your body feeling fresh and rejuvenated.
