OUR MINI VACATION TO THE
BRUCE PENINSULA
Active. Attractive. A!ordable.
Everything you need in a retirement community!
– Story & photo submitted by reader Barbara Weiler, Waterloo, ON.
(edited for space)
We have always enjoyed road trips, but find that three or
four days are enough for us now. We drove from our home
in Waterloo to Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula, which we
discovered has developed into a bustling tourist destination.
We returned to Lions Head halfway down the peninsula for
a quieter stay at Taylor Made Bed and Breakfast and a lovely
evening walk on the beach and the Bruce Trail. After an excellent
breakfast we drove through Sauble Beach to Southampton.
The community beach there is lovely and we were able to find
a shady bench overlooking the water to enjoy a picnic lunch.
After a stroll beach-side through the newly established butterfly
gardens, we headed for the Bruce County Museum. What a
wonderful place to discover in a small town! This museum is
amazing, following the development of the Bruce through
history.
We moved on to Port Elgin where we checked into the Silken
Retreat B&B. This was a return visit as we had before experienced
the ambience owner
Priscilla had created
in this century-old
home, with such
hospitality and
attention to detail.
The gardens there
are well tended and
provided a serene
place to relax after
a gourmet meal

at the Woodpecker
restaurant.
Much of the next day was spent in family pursuits, and late in
the afternoon we checked in at the Benmiller Inn near Goderich.
This Inn was created from an old woollen mill about 1970,
using the timber and barn boards from three different barns.
The stairs were a bit challenging, and the massive doors on the
bedrooms made me think I might actually be in Hogwarts –
Harry Potter’s school. We enjoyed a flavourful dinner by the
window overlooking the mill stream, and a walk around the
extensive property.
After a stroll along the nearby Harbour we were ready to return
home – a peaceful drive on a sunny day through the flourishing
farm land of South Western Ontario. We felt truly blessed to
live in such a beautiful part of the country. •
