I’ve often been asked where
I find my inspiration for the
articles we publish. The truth
is, they’re inspired by people
I meet.
While in the frozen isle at the
market, “William” shared that
his wife had recently passed,
and that’s why he was buying so
many TV dinners. I encouraged
William to join the seniors’ centre to surround himself with
new friends, and visit the Legion for dinner & dance nights.
And then I realized that cooking for one is not difficult.
Maybe intimidating for someone like William who has done
minimal cooking throughout his life, but he’d be able to tackle
some of these recipes (p. 24).
“Betty” is a senior; she has no children, the house is paid
for, and her husband “Bob” manages the money. If Betty
outlives Bob, she admitted to me that she would have no idea
what to do. She wants to travel, but doesn’t understand about
home equity and how it can help her enjoy her life now. Is
it too late for Betty to learn? I was shocked to find out how
many women are in the same boat as Betty. So we planned
our “Empowering Women” easy conversation class (p. 21).
Doing some research after the Burlington floods of August,
I realized the need for a Hygrometer. To my surprise, our
60 year old house’s basement indicated a Relative Humidity
of almost 80% (no wonder we had so many clothes moths
appearing!) So I decided to share the info I learned with our
readers (p. 14). I’d love to hear back from you on this!
New experiences, and especially sharing them with others,
are what make life just that much brighter. We cross paths
with strangers every day, but do we greet each other? Does
the cashier at the supermarket make eye contact with you?
Have you ever asked the staff at the coffee shop to make you
their favourite coffee? (This is a good one, try it).
Maybe what we need is to make our world a little bigger:
Say ‘hello’ to a total stranger, just once per day. Ask them
something. Bring out a smile in them. And since summer
was (or at least felt) so short, let’s extend it into the fall: visit
the farmer’s market as long as possible, hold garage sales,
plant new flowers, go for outdoor walks, sit out in the sun
and walk barefoot for a few minutes, even if it’s cooler out...
If all else fails and you would like to make a new friend,
you can always email me a ‘hello’ note! You can at least be
sure that I will write back. Always.
