It turned out to be a very exhilarating evening. Through
the combined efforts of several Chamber members, by the
next morning, Halliday’s had temporary furnished offices and
a working telephone system. This enabled them to answer
hundreds of calls coming in from customers, who, because
of nationwide news coverage, had learned of the disaster.
Considering that this multi-million-dollar business had just
had all its facilities destroyed by fire the day before, this was
indeed quite an accomplishment. It turned into a fantastic
testimonial for both our Chamber of Commerce and the
Chamber system worldwide, as it showed that no Chamber
member stood alone; they could rely on their fellow members
in a crisis.
Eventually, a new Halliday plant was built on Dundas Street
near Appleby Line. Of course, we attended the Grand Re-
Opening of this facility. It was a proud moment for everyone
involved.
Somewhere, in my files dating back to that time, I have a letter
from Bud on behalf of the Board of Directors at Halliday’s,
thanking me for my efforts that evening, and all the assistance
we were able to generate from Chamber members that enabled
Halliday’s to be up and running the very next morning. It was,
indeed, quite an accomplishment and certainly one of the
highlights of my term as Chamber president.•
