Smell • The sense of smell can help us identify danger, remind us of certain moments (remember Mom’s perfume?), and even affect our learning capacity. Not everyone smells the same odour in exactly the same way. • Smells can instantly take us back to a certain childhood moment – better than any visual cue! • Blind people smell fear better than sighted people. Not only fear — blind people make better use of olfaction when assessing other emotional states as well. • According to a 2013 study published in the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences, African-Americans and Hispanics experience loss of smelling related to age earlier than Caucasians. • Scientists have done many studies based on one’s capacity to learn from different smells. Experiments showed, for example, that the scent of Rosemary can improve one’s memory. • While sound can disrupt our sleep, scents cannot. We can’t rely on our sense of smell to wake us up in emergencies – like a fire – which is why our homes are equipped with smoke detectors. • Women are better at identifying smells than men. • Given that the brain’s olfactory bulb is linked to the hippocampus, which deals with learning, encouraging studies have been linked to using grapefruit scents for math, lavender for French and spearmint for history. • The scent cells in your nose are renewed every couple of months, as millions of scent cells die and are replaced by new nerve cells in the inner lining of your nose. • The nose can smell at least one trillion distinct scents. • According to Dr. Luong, assistant professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, the sense of smell is the only cranial nerve that can regenerate. One big difference between men and women is that if a woman says, “Smell this” it usually smells nice. Celebrating over 25years OF HELPING PEOPLE hear better......
