Siena Heights University HIS 304 AMERICAN WEST 3 This course covers the history of the U.S. West from European contact through the late 19 th century. Several key themes are explored: The U.S. Federal government and its role in the conquest, economic development, growth, and administration of the West; the legacy of that conquest for various peoples; human interaction with the environment; the formation of communities in the West; and the role of the mythic West in American popular culture.
