Together , these labs formed one of the most progressive research units in pediatric orthopedics in the world . Their discoveries and innovations have been shared with specialists from the four corners of the planet and have helped to place Shriners Hospitals at the forefront of pediatric research .
While investing in research , the hospitals ’ leadership also decided to invest in an ambitious renovation and expansion projects in 1986 and 1992 . New labs , equipment and state-of-theart installations would help maintain the establishment as one of the most modern of its kind in the country . However , the continued increase in the volume of patients and the limited space for future eventual expansions forced the Shriners to look for a new site .
New horizons ( 2000-2015 )
Though the investments made in the 1980s and 1990s helped greatly augment the output of the hospital ’ s number of patients treated , the greater diversification of cases treated and the surge in the number surgeries ( 596 in 2000 vs . 1086 in 2013 ) and clinical visits ( going from 9,805 to 16,922 during the same period ) were forcing the hospital ’ s administrators to examine the necessity of moving to a new site .
From the small unit treating polio in the 1920s , Shriners Hospitals for Children – Canada was now addressing many needs and offering a wide variety of care including : >>
