The University of Bordeaux offers 250 Master’s programmes and
150 Bachelor’s programmes, including vocational programmes,
across a wide range of disciplines in Science and Technology;
Law, Political Science, Economics and Management; Life and
Health Sciences; and Social and Human Sciences. The University
also offers national diplomas in Health and in Oenology. There
are currently 56,000 students enrolled at the university, in
undergraduate and postgraduate studies, for over 3200
members of teaching and research staff from more than 50
scientific disciplines.
STAFF MEMBERS
Melanie White
Mélanie White is a lecturer at the University of Bordeaux where she teaches English for Specific Purposes in
health and human sciences. She coordinates postgraduate English courses for Biology and Sports Sciences. Her
research interests are blended learning systems and online distance learning, interaction and interactivity,
multimodality, student motivation and engagement, creative writing and storytelling in ESP, and digital literacy.
Sue Becaas
Susan Birch-Bécaas is a senior lecturer at the University of Bordeaux where she is head of the language
department for students in health and human sciences. She coordinates English for Specific Purposes (ESP)
courses for students of public health. Her research interests include the analysis of scientific discourse and its
pedagogical applications, (English for Research and Publication Purposes), Content and Language Integrated
Learning and blended learning. She is also involved in the Défi International programme (teaching in the

Laura Hoskins
Laura Hoskins is an English for Specific Purposes teacher at the University of Bordeaux where she coordinates
and teaches courses for undergraduate students in health and human sciences. She is also involved in teacher
development for English medium instruction (EMI) and the international classroom through her work for Défi
