Tending the Pin

In the American whiskey category , I would suggest starting off with the staples . Tee off with some classics like Old Grandad ( bottled in bond for the win ) or Wild Turkey for bourbons . From the rye whiskies , I prefer Old Overholt or Rittenhouse Rye . They ’ ve been around for a long time for the simple reason that they ’ re well made whiskies priced under $ 25 . My personal favorite below $ 20 bourbon of all time is Heaven Hill distillery ’ s JTS Brown Bottled in Bond . Its only $ 11.99 and it over delivers . I would honestly drink any of these over the big , overpriced and underwhelming whiskies that the flashy label fanatics are lining up for . If you want to add a complete lineup of solid whiskies from a single distiller to your collection , I would suggest Michter ’ s Whiskey . They have many different expressions of bourbons and ryes , cask strength bottlings , different barrel finishes and older age statements that are all well made , balanced whiskies . From the famed Michter ’ s Celebration limited release bottling to their Toasted Rye . Depending on the occasion and your budget , there may be several bottles with your name out there . A whiskey for any occasion . Golf course bottles are perfect for a little comradery . Usually poured in a plastic or Styrofoam cup . Why you ask ? Because it ’ s golf . Don ’ t be that guy that brings an expensive glencairn to the golf course . I drink mine straight from the bottle . Have fun with it ! If money is no object then bring out the good stuff ! It all depends on the individual . My only suggestion is to grab something between 80 – 100 proof . That is if you ’ re not an experienced imbiber and don ’ t want to be an absolute mess by the ninth hole . It ’ s all about the longevity . If you do want to get hammered , by all means , go ahead . There is no judgment here .
