Moored just off the Normandy coast, Guernsey is a real gem and just the place to get away from it all and recharge the batteries. Whether meeting the friendly locals, delving into their history and heritage, feeling the sand between your toes on unspoilt beaches, embracing island hopping and outdoor adventures or, simply reinvigorating amidst glorious surroundings, it’ s a place to create memories that last a lifetime.
Guernsey definitely delivers where beaches are concerned, with a variety of unique spots to enjoy and unwind. From the sandy, pebbly coves and sheltered bays of the east and south coasts, to the lush open west coast and wide expanses of white sand of the north, an enticing beach and crystal-clear waters are never more than four minutes away by car, no matter where you are on the island.
Stepping out on foot is by far the best way to explore the island. There are lots of scenic routes to choose from, including the meandering cliff paths and the winding Ruettes Tranquilles, a series of narrow lanes which lead you offthe-beaten-track through the countryside. Whichever you opt for, you’ ll be rewarded with views at every corner. The network of quiet roads, tranquil lanes and picturesque coastlines are also perfect for cycling.
Adventurous souls and nature lovers alike will want to embrace Guernsey’ s diverse outdoor activities, be it coasteering and wild swimming, or getting out on the water aboard a kayak or paddleboard. If in need of a culture fix, there’ s ancient castles, hidden bunkers, art houses, fascinating museums, a tiny version of Lourdes and the home of Victor Hugo, one of the world’ s most celebrated authors.
St Peter Port, the island’ s charming capital, is considered one of Europe’ s prettiest harbour towns. With its cobbled streets, picturesque marina and vibrant squares brimming with cafes and quaint boutiques, it is easy to see why.
Islanders are passionate about their food and this is reflected in the thriving local culinary scene, so be sure to pack your appetite and indulge. From chic dining in hip restaurants and good value pub grub, an indulgent afternoon tea or a family picnic on the beach, every dining experience offers fabulously fresh ingredients and a tantalising choice.
Whether you have a couple of days or a couple of weeks, it’ s well worth taking the time to explore the beautiful sister islands of Alderney, Sark and Herm. Each island has charms of it’ s own and what’ s even better, they’ re all just a short hop from Guernsey. See pages 70-77.
