On July 1, 1979, Sony released the first Walkman, a portable cassette player that transformed how people experienced music. Officially called the Sony TPS-L2, the compact device came with lightweight headphones and allowed users to take their personal soundtrack anywhere— a radical shift from the bulky home stereo systems of the time.
Co-founder Masaru Ibuka reportedly wanted a way to listen to music on long flights, prompting Sony engineers to adapt their existing Pressman tape recorder into a playback-only device. Despite internal skepticism, the Walkman became a sensation. It wasn’ t just a piece of technology— it was a cultural shift. For the first time, music became personal and portable, changing listening habits around the world.
The initial model sold for around $ 150( roughly $ 600
today), and demand quickly outpaced expectations. Within a decade, tens of millions of Walkmans were sold globally, spawning countless imitators and solidifying Sony’ s reputation as a consumer electronics powerhouse.
The Walkman not only changed how we listened to music but also influenced fashion, fitness culture, and even urban behavior. Joggers, commuters, and teenagers alike could now carry their favorite tunes anywhere, tuning out the world and curating their own sonic environment.
Though eventually eclipsed by CDs, MP3 players, and smartphones, the original Walkman’ s legacy endures. It set the template for the iPod and modern streaming habits, ushering in the age of on-thego entertainment. With its 1979 debut, Sony didn’ t just launch a gadget— it launched a movement.
