On June 19, 1978, a lazy, lasagna-loving orange cat named Garfield debuted in 41 newspapers. Created by cartoonist Jim Davis, the comic strip introduced readers to the sardonic feline and his socially awkward owner, Jon Arbuckle. It has featured well over 14,000 strips, not including spin-offs, animated specials, merchandise, and films. Garfield’ s popularity sparked a massive franchise that includes toys, books( with millions sold), and TV shows like Garfield and Friends( 1988 – 1994).
Despite changes in popular culture and media, Garfield’ s appeal has remained remarkably consistent. New strips are still produced under Davis’ s supervision, now by his company, Paws, Inc., and distributed by Andrews McMeel Syndication.
