The day was meant to honor Gehrig, who had retired from baseball after a remarkable 17-season career. Known as“ The Iron Horse,” he had played in 2,130 consecutive games— a record that stood for 56 years. Despite his devastating diagnosis and physical decline, Gehrig stood before the crowd with humility and grace.
With his voice trembling but clear, he told the audience,“ Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth.” He thanked his teammates, fans, and family, expressing gratitude rather than bitterness. The moment moved many to tears, including Gehrig’ s teammates and fans across the country who listened on radio.
