Superstitions of the Pennsylvania Dutch ;
With no standard well of information to pull from other than the church , the early Pennsylvania Dutch held closely to family traditions and those of their neighbors . Thanks in part to William Penn ’ s initial claims of Pennsylvania being open to all religions , these traditions and superstitions melded together over time , with Germanic rites taking obvious precedence . The following superstitions were sourced from “ Beliefs and Superstitions of the Pennsylvania Germans ,” written in 1915 by Edwin Miller Fogel . Broom – If you feel as though you ’ ve been bewitched by a cursed witch , simply lay one of these before your door . The first person to walk through will reveal themselves as the witch . Cats – A classic harbinger of bad luck , especially if you ’ re met by a black cat . Nevertheless , a black cat that wanders into your home on its own accord is a sign of good luck . “ Des tswet des drit sich ” – Translates roughly to “ What ’ s seconds is thirds ,” an old colloquialism describing the concept of bad things coming in threes . Eggshells – Burn them to prevent chickens from being bewitched . Fingernails – Cut those bad boys during the new moon for good luck . Garden – To rid yourself of warts , rub the problem areas with a stolen piece of beef and bury it in your garden . Horseshoe – To find and pick up an old horseshoe ( or rusty nail ) is good luck . Icicles – Their length between Christmas and the New Year indicates the depth of snow during winter . Journey – It will be successful so long as you give a dollar to the first beggar you encounter .
