In 1971, in our second year at Sacred Heart, Jane asked me to try out for the choir, and I somehow managed to get into it, so we were rather pleased to be together again. The first choir practice I was placed in order of height on one of the lower tiers, and off we went! Only a few minutes lapsed before the choir mistress said STOP, quite suddenly and we all fell silent. She came up onto the stage and told us to start singing again. Sure enough, the choir mistress honed in on her target – me. She asked me to sing the last few lines and I knew I was a goner, but how bad WAS I that she managed to pick my voice out of the whole choir, and so quickly too! Talk about embarrassing – I had to scramble down the tiers, red faced, seeing Jane looking sorrowfully at me, and go back to class.
