One of the highlights of 2017 for all students at Sacred Heart was the trip to Luna Park on Friday 15 September. Not only did it get us out of schoolwork and out of our classrooms, it enabled us to spend the day laughing and chatting with friends.

My classmates and I literally sprinted off the bus and through the mouth that is the entry to Luna Park. Many of the Year 10, 11 and 12 students who had made their own way there had already arrived and the air was filled with the buzz of excitement and screams of delight. My friends and I unanimously decided on the dodgem cars as our first ride.

The line was already quite long but half an hour later we were slamming into each other’s cars and the walls with bright smiles lighting up our faces. Upon completion of the ride, we did a rapid reconnaissance of the park before clambering onto the Spider; the park became a multi-coloured blur around our spinning carriages. This was followed in quick succession by the Coney Island Top Drop, the Twin Dragon, and then back to the dodgem cars.

At lunchtime we took a break from our frantic rush around the park and our mission to go on as many rides as was humanly possible. We ate massive sticks of fairy floss with our lunch at the covered outdoor tables. Some of us went on the Ferris wheel to admire the beautiful view of St. Kilda beach. I somehow let my friend talk me into joining her on the Pharaoh’s Curse, commonly referred to as the “Scissors”. I screamed so loud I may have deafened her, yet it was the most fun I had had all day and we went straight back on.

While waiting in line we watched the courageous teachers and students who had decided to brave the Power Surge. I was extremely glad I was not one of them. Just before two o’clock in the afternoon the heavens opened up and absolutely drenched us. We all huddled in the area where we had eaten lunch, attempting to find our teacher and round up our classmates in the mass of sopping wet students. The seats on the bus on our return trip to school got very wet as a result.

Despite the crazy weather, I enjoyed the day immensely and was very glad to be a student at Sacred Heart during this jubilee year.
