Playgrounds

One of the challenges SHERP brings is also one of its best opportunities for helping students to understand the impact humans have on the natural environment. Flora and fauna share our landscaped playgrounds and our trail system --- the very spaces where our children love to run, climb, imagine, gather found materials, build, and imagine some more.

A closer look at the trees and shrubs surrounding the playground helps students see what else uses the space---2 bird nests and 14 praying mantis egg sacs were found one season.

Respect and thinking twice about behaviors takes on new meaning, as does seeing ourselves as animals with habitat needs too. On the trail, children understand why certain areas are off-limits and how certain spaces, like the stump seating area, are there for our needs to explore, play, imagine and create.
