Schools for the Community , by the Community

Since the end of January , when the Sherman ISD Board of Trustees approved to call a bond election , I ’ ve had the opportunity to speak with hundreds of people about the future of our schools . We met with more than 30 community groups like the Rotary , Lions Club , PTA ’ s , and other associations . Our time with each group reminded us how interconnected we are in our close-knit community . Together we have an important decision to make about the future of our schools . On May 6 , Sherman ISD voters will consider a bond proposal that focuses on addressing aging facilities , providing modern learning spaces , and increasing technology district-wide . Because it has been 11 years since the last Sherman ISD bond , we knew a great deal of thought and community collaboration were critical to the development of a master plan that could guide the district on how to address the future of our facilities . Out of this need came the establishment of the Sherman ISD Building Bearcats 2030 Committee . The Building Bearcats 2030 Committee included SISD staff and more than 70 volunteers from across the district including parents , community leaders , elected officials , clergy , and business owners . This group donated more than 1,000 hours over four months to study , discuss , and create a new , long-term master facilities plan . These incredible volunteers were charged with considering and evaluating the facility needs of our district in light of enrollment projections , financial capacity , and the potential for new , innovative academic programs . The committee ’ s work culminated in the recommendation sent to the Board of Trustees to call for a bond election . It was a recommendation that did not come lightly from the Building Bearcats Committee or our Trustees . It is , however , a long term approach to creating a future that will honor our past . I encourage you to learn more about the 2017 Bond by attending a Bond Information Meeting or visiting the bond website at www . ShermanISD . net / Bond2017 . I ’ m very proud to Build Bearcats alongside our incredible teachers and staff , and in partnership with so many community groups including the Chamber of Commerce , the City and County , SEDCO , Workforce Solutions , and Austin and Grayson Colleges . The highlighted stories in this issue of School & Family Magazine illustrate how the collaborative efforts of our community are strengthening our schools through innovative programs . We ’ re all working hard , and best of all , working together .
Sincerely , Dr . David Hicks Superintendent
