10 Things to know about the SISD Bond
1 . The amount of the SISD Bond 2017 and its proposed projects was determined by the 70 + - member Citizens Advisory Committee , which included parents , staff , business leaders , and community advocates .
2 . The Citizens Advisory Committee was asked to consider bond projects based on district goals needs , and best use . District goals and needs being addressed are : Technology , Capacity , Career and Technical Education , Address Aging Facilities , Grade Reconfiguration , and Athletics & Fine Arts Facilities .
3 . Extensive community feedback and input provided through surveys , online Q & As , face-to-face discussions , community meetings and more were taken into consideration when developing this bond package .
4 . The $ 176 million bond calls for upgrading the technology infrastructure , building a new Sherman HS on a new site , converting Sherman HS and Piner to 6-8 middle schools and reconfiguring elementaries to grades K-5 . This would include a new , state-of-the-art high school and repairs and renovations to HVAC and Energy Management Systems at the current Sherman HS .
5 . Traditionally , school districts pass bond measures to help pay for costly , extensive facility improvements . The district does not receive state or federal monies to address its facilities .
6 . Sherman ISD has grown by about 1,000 students in the past 10 years and is projected to grow another 1,000 + students in the next 10 years . From 2016-17 to 2017-18 , the district has seen 6.3 % growth – well above the average growth of 1-2 %.
7 . As of the eighth day of classes , Sherman HS had 1,909 students enrolled . The campus has a capacity of 1,400 . In the first week of school , Sherman HS exceeded enrollment projections for the 2017-18 school year .
8 . The district ’ s current debt to taxable value ratio is 2.3 % -- one of the lowest in Grayson County and in the North Texas region . SISD has saved taxpayers more than $ 28 million in interest costs by aggressively paying down debt over the past eight years .
9 . Homeowners 65 years and older will not see an increase in their SISD tax rate if they file for an over 65 Homestead Exemption with the Grayson County tax office .
