PHARMACY
Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy,
in partnership with George Washington
University and Loudoun County Public
Schools (LCPS), hosted the sixth annual
GO GIRL (Genomic Opportunities for
Girls in Research Labs™) educational
outreach program in June for rising 10th-,
11th- and 12th-grade girls enrolled in
LCPS. The GO GIRL program provides
hands-on laboratory experience for young
women interested in gaining hands-on
laboratory experience in molecular biology
and genomics. The four-day summer
program was funded by a grant to LCPS
from Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Shenandoah University received an AMX
Innovation Award in June for its use
of technology in improving the campus
experience. Winners were announced
this summer at the UBTech Conference.
Honored in the Classroom Automation
category, Shenandoah was cited for its
innovative use of automation and control
systems in classrooms. The university
developed a standard room build for
different-sized classrooms based around
AMX switcher and touch panel technology,
in order to provide a uniform experience for
students and faculty. The university received
$25,000 toward AMX products to upgrade
the Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy
classroom technology infrastructure.
Bringing ‘Hornet’ Spirit Downtown by Mary Katherine Francisco ’16
The Hornet football team and pep band, The Buzzin’ Dozen,
participated in Downtown Tailgate ’14 in September, bringing
Shenandoah enthusiasm and hometown pride to the streets of
Old Town Winchester. The Buzzin’ Dozen performed several of its
favorite songs while Head Football Coach Scott Yoder announced
football captains for the 2014 season.
Zipp also expressed his appreciation for The Buzzin’ Dozen’s
presence in making the event a success.
“Our goal was to invite and encourage local residents to attend
Shenandoah’s home games at Shentel Stadium,” said Athletic Director
Doug Zipp, who expressed his gratitude to Downtown Tailgate
coordinators for inviting Shenandoah student-athletes to participate.
“The Buzzin’ Dozen is a great representation of Shenandoah
University,” said Buzzin’ Dozen Director Steven Cusick ’13. “We’re
students from just about every school on campus, both graduate
and undergraduate.”
The event gave Shenandoah Athletics an opportunity to introduce
Zipp, Yoder, and team captains — quarterback Andrew Ferguson
’15, defensive end Jacob Payne ’16, linebacker Sean Blackman ’15
and wide receiver Brandon Adams ’16 — to the community.
Cusick joined the group as a freshman. Now, as a graduate student,
he continues to serve as its director.
“We were greeted by many people, and we gave away free tickets
to home games," said Zipp. “It was great exposure, and the
community seemed genuinely excited about our football program.”
"The Buzzin' Dozen brings an extraordinary energy to our athletic
events," said Zipp. "Their support, personality, and enthusiasm adds
incredible excitement and spirit to our campus and our community."
“We love having Shenandoah students involved with the Old
Town Winchester projects,” said Winchester Downtown Manager
Jennifer Bell. “The university has been extremely supportive of the
downtown area, and we will continue to seek more opportunities
to involve students in future events.”
