Professor of English and Director of
the Willa Cather Institute John Jacobs,
Ph.D., helped launch Winchester’s “One
Book, One Community 2013” program
that highlights Willa Cather’s 1913 novel
“O Pioneers!” and celebrates the centennial
of the Handley Regional Library, with
a lecture and discussion, “Willa Cather
and Impressionism,” at the Museum
of the Shenandoah Valley. At the 14th
International Willa Cather Seminar in
Flagstaff, Ariz., Dr. Jacobs presented a
paper, “Storytelling in ‘A Week on the
Concord and Merrimac Rivers’ and ‘Death
Comes for the Archbishop.’”
Associate Professor of Art History and
Art Geraldine Kiefer, Ph.D., completed
her spring sabbatical in art and spiritual
mapping at Wesley Theological Seminary in
Washington, D.C. She exhibited her work in
the national juried show, “Map It,” on view at
the Riverside Arts Center Gallery in Ypsilanti,
Mich., and also mounted a one-person show,
“The Picturesque James,” in the Gellman
Gallery of the Richmond Public Library. The
latter show comprised her photographs and
calligraphy-enhanced digital reproductions of
19th-century James River engravings.
